OUR HISTORY

Historic Little Lon

The Commonwealth Government compulsorily acquired the district in 1948 after facing pressure to abolish the slums. Little Lon became the focus of an ambitious archaeology project in 1987, with excavations revealing the nature of the historic use of the site.

20 years after the foundation of Melbourne, this site was a well-established district of notoriety. Known by its popular name, Little Lon, this small neighbourhood was home to a diverse community of Chinese, Italian, Syrian and Jewish immigrants who lived cheek by jowl in tiny timber and brick cottages, surrounded by shops and factories.

We would like to acknowledge the Wurundjeri people as the Traditional Custodians of this land on which the Spring Precinct is located. We would also like to pay respect to the Elders both past and present of the Kulin Nation and extend that respect to all Indigenous Australians.

Today, Spring Place is a city destination rich in culture offering our building community the perfect balance of work and life.

Spaces

The site of Spring Place has a rich and colourful history. An archaeological dig liberated historic artefacts that date back to the 1850s. Explore some of the site’s historical collection of artefacts displayed throughout the precinct, including the building foyers. The historic artefacts offer a rare and tangible insight into how the community lived in the 19th Century.

From al fresco dining in Lygon Street to performances in the city and the country’s finest sporting events, the best of our city is on the doorstep of Spring Place. Spring Place is only a short stroll to Carlton, Parliament and Fitzroy Gardens, Lygon Street, Chinatown, Princess Theatre, Her Majesty’s Theatre, The Comedy Theatre, the MCG and so much more.

Enjoy some of the most well-known parks and gardens in Melbourne. The neighbourhood character is defined by picturesque greenery such as Royal College of Surgeons, Parliament Gardens, Fitzroy Gardens and Carlton Gardens.
